Most games need no signal at all, and some refuse to start without one. Four checks at the gate decide which kind you have.
Choose games that never needed the internet
Where to find it: The App Store or Google Play, the game's page, its details
Puzzle, card, word and strategy games usually play entirely on the phone. Games built around live matches, daily online events or streaming need a connection and are best left for the hotel.
Open each game once before you board
Where to find it: Each game, start a round on Wi-Fi
Many games download extra levels or art on their first launch. Opening each one at home lets that finish while you still have fast Wi-Fi.
Test it in Airplane Mode
Where to find it: Control Center or Quick Settings, Airplane Mode
Switch Airplane Mode on at home and start each game. If it plays, it will play at thirty thousand feet; if it asks to connect, swap it before you leave. Bluetooth stays on in Airplane Mode, so a wireless controller or headphones keep working.
Pack power for the screen
Where to find it: A charging cable or a power bank in your bag
A game with a bright screen drains the battery faster than reading. Many seats have a USB port, but bring a cable and a small power bank in case yours does not.
